Dr. Raymond Smith

Director for Systems Engineering Sustainability
Dr. Raymond Smith is an assistant professor of engineering in the College of Engineering and Technology at East Carolina University. Dr. Smith’s research focuses on developing and applying operation research and analysis methodologies to provide model-based, implementable solutions for complex systems. His research includes applications to complex problems in healthcare, public health, supply chain, service systems, sustainability, and infrastructure. Using quantitative modeling, Dr. Smith has examined how vulnerable systems can be modified to improve how well they can resist, absorb, or adapt to gradual and sudden changes. Dr. Smith earned his Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering, a master’s degree in economics, a M.S. in industrial engineering and operations research, and a B.S. degree in industrial engineering from North Carolina State University. Additionally, he earned a M.S. degree in systems architecting and engineering from the University of Southern California. He is a member of the American Society of Engineering Educators (ASEE), the American Society of Engineering Management (ASEM), the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE), the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS), and the System Dynamics Society (SDS). Prior to joining the academy, Dr. Smith spent over twenty years in the information technology industry in both technical and senior leadership roles.
