P2 Summer 2024 Internships
Chris’ Internship at BSH in New Bern
Environmental Engineering Student
“While the drive may be long, this summer has been very rewarding. During my time at CSE3, I have had exposure to a variety of tools used in energy, water, and lean assessments, opportunities to network with companies, and participation in seminars and workshops. I have also had excellent opportunities for networking and developing organizational and supervisory skills.”
Jonathan’s Internship at Mt. Olive Pickle Company
Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Student
“As an intern, my main priority is pollution prevention and waste reduction. I have found multiple potential solutions for issues around the facility and continue to identify areas that could benefit from additional waste reduction. I have collected various data, from wastewater measurements to air compressor leaks.”
Student Achievements
Congratulations Pablo Nuñez!
The CSE3 congratulates Pablo Nuñez for graduating this summer with a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. We also welcome him to the team as a Pollution Prevention Specialist. Here’s what Pablo shared about his experience with the center:
“Transitioning from college to the full-time working world can be challenging, but this experience has been enlightening. Sometimes dealing with coworkers and gathering information can be difficult, but you just have to get creative in how you request or find the information. It teaches a certain creative resilience in ensuring you get the information you need however you can.”
Ariel Lineberger’s New Role
Ariel Lineberger graduated from ECU in the fall of 2023 with a degree in Engineering, concentrating in Environmental Engineering.
Since her graduation and departure from her roles as lab manager and CSE3 pollution prevention coordinator, she has extended her time with CSE3 as an appointed Research Engineer.
Her skills in project management, data analysis, and data management have played a vital role within the CSE3 wastewater projects and summer internships. Her impactful effort here at CSE3 will be remembered fondly as she transitions to a new role at Jacobs working as an Environmental Compliance Engineer.
Project Spotlight
CMII Project Collaboration
Faculty in CSE3 have partnered with the Civil Military Innovation Institute and the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army to evaluate the potential benefits and challenges of restoring native vegetation throughout the 82nd Airborne Division’s footprint at Ft. Liberty. This project includes monitoring research plots planted with native vegetation and providing estimates of labor, resource, and CO2 emission reductions from restoring native vegetation.

CSE3 Exhibit at the Environmental Energy Health & Safety School
On August 6 and 7, the CSE3 participated with a booth in the McKimmon Conference and Training Center at NC State to promote the assessments, courses and webinars available to manufacture facilities across North Carolina at no cost thanks to EPA funding program.
