Overview
The Center for Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering at East Carolina University is proud to host the 2027 Sustainability Symposium: Powering Manufacturing Communities: Energy, Growth, and Innovation. This annual event brings together leaders from manufacturing, utilities, renewable energy, economic development, government, academia, and industry to explore practical strategies that strengthen manufacturing competitiveness while advancing sustainable energy solutions.
Through expert presentations, industry case studies, and collaborative discussions, participants will examine emerging technologies, energy efficiency, renewable energy, workforce and economic development, and innovative approaches that support resilient manufacturing communities. The symposium provides a unique opportunity to exchange ideas, build partnerships, and discover actionable solutions that help manufacturers improve operational performance while contributing to the long-term growth and sustainability of North Carolina’s economy.

Symposium Panels
The 2027 Sustainability Symposium will feature three dynamic panel discussions exploring how energy, innovation, and cross-sector collaboration can strengthen manufacturing competitiveness and support thriving communities.
Panel 1 – Sustainable Energy solutions for competitive Manufacturing Communities
This panel will explore how manufacturers are leveraging energy efficiency, renewable energy, utility partnerships, and sustainability strategies to reduce operating costs, strengthen resilience, and remain competitive. Industry leaders will share practical experiences and successful approaches to integrating sustainable energy solutions into manufacturing operations.
Panel 2 – Innovation for Sustainable Growth
This discussion will highlight emerging technologies and innovative strategies transforming modern manufacturing. Topics include AI-driven energy management, smart manufacturing, environmental technologies, water conservation, circular economy practices, and operational improvements that support sustainable growth and long-term competitiveness.
Panel 3 – Building Sustainable, Competitive, and Resilient Built Environments
This panel explored the role of infrastructure, utilities, green buildings, net-zero buildings, and regional collaboration in creating sustainable built environments that support industrial growth, energy transitions, and long-term economic competitiveness. The discussion highlighted how developers, construction managers, utilities, local governments, and industry leaders can work together to deliver resilient, resource-efficient communities and industrial facilities.
