The College’s Technology Systems department recently hosted the ECU Cyber Storm Capture-the-Flag Contest, which was sponsored by the Raleigh Chapter of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) The contest was open to ECU students and employees. The competition required participants to employ a variety of skills to identify and carry out attacks against vulnerable systems to find clues that will lead them to additional vulnerabilities or clues.

More than 26 students participated in the event. Winners of the event were:

  • 1st place:  Jacob Walker, freshman from Honolulu, Hawaii
  • 2nd place: Hunter Leggett, freshman from Hope Mills, North Carolina
  • 3rd place:  Steven Brock, senior from Fayetteville, North Carolina

Robert Martin, a senior security engineer with Cisco Systems, helped bring the Capture-the-Flag Contest to the College. He received his MS in in Network Technology – Information Security from the College. He sees ISSA having a strong relationship with the College’s student chapter and giving students “real-world” skill sets that will enable them to be more competitive in the job market.

“We’re going to bring in speakers and events such as this one,” said Martin.
