Dr. Gunerathne has a background of civil engineering specialized in structural and geotechnical engineering. He enjoys teaching both undergraduate and graduate students. He is interested in teaching engineering mechanics, including:

  • Computer Applications in Engineering

Research Interests

Dr. Gunerathne’s research goal is to develop more efficient, sustainable, and resilient solutions for society’s infrastructure needs by understanding and analyzing the behavior of soil-structure interaction. Specially, his focus is on:

  • Foundation Engineering
  • Analytical and Numerical Methods in Geomechanics
  • Off-shore and Near-shore Foundations
  • Soil-buried Structures / Tunneling
  • Geotechnical Instrumentation and Monitoring
  • Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering
  • Geothermal energy
