Industrial and Systems Engineering Concentration

Industrial and Systems Engineering Concentration

Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) is the perfect blend of technical engineering skills and people orientation. Industrial and systems engineers focus on the design, analysis, and operation of systems ranging from a single piece of equipment to large business, social, and environmental systems. Industrial and systems engineering addresses overall system performance and productivity, responsiveness to customer’s needs, and the quality of the products or services produced by the enterprise. This field is not just about manufacturing, but also encompasses service industries such as government, health care, transportation, logistics, and consulting. The common goal is improving efficiency, enhancing quality, and increasing customer satisfaction.

The ECU Industrial and Systems Engineering concentration focuses on developing critical skills in areas such as:

  • Systems Engineering and Engineering Management – Building on the ability to model, analyze, and optimize systems. ISE graduates also integrate the human side of management processes to achieve improvement in technological and engineering systems ranging from hospitals to aircraft carriers.
  • Production and Service Systems Analysis – The dynamic nature of the flow of materials is an essential area and these principles cover all types of production systems, including flow in a factory or hospital to distribution of goods and services.
  • Work Measurement, Human Factors, and Ergonomics – The ability to design human work environments including measurement of work activities and integration of human factors and ergonomics is an essential skill area in ISE graduates.
