Teaching Interests

Dr. Castles teaches courses in electrical engineering, as well as the freshman core engineering classes.  His particular teaching interests are as follows:
  • Computer Applications in Engineering
  • Circuit Analysis
  • Digital Electronics
  • Microprocessors
  • Electromechanical System Design

Research Interests

Dr. Castles is interested in the areas of wireless sensor networks and their applications.  He has several collaborative projects in the areas of nursing, education, and biomedical engineering.

Specifically, he is interested in physiological monitoring including heart rate variability, galvanic skin response, electroencephalography, accelerometers, and the various applications of physiological sensors.  He is particularly interested in monitoring engagement in learning environments and the development of adaptive tutorial systems. His research interests also include engineering education and finding ways to increase access to engineering for students from low-income and rural backgrounds.
