Teaching Interests

Undergraduate Engineering Fundamentals: A focus on technical communication skills within the context of mechanical engineering subject matter.
Practical Experiment-Rich Inquiry: Upper-level undergraduate electives and independent guided research in acoustics and vibrations.
Graduate program development: Numerical methods, experimental methods, and topical course development with a focus in mechanical vibration and mechanics.

Research Interests

Dynamics: Optical measurement systems (laser Doppler vibrometry) to study dynamics of complex structures for a wide variety of applications including percussion instruments, MEMS resonators, and improvised explosive devices (IED); mass detection techniques using lightly coupled resonator arrays; disorder and localization in such coupled resonant systems.
Acoustics: Hybrid UAV+terrestrial sensor arrays for study of long-range acoustic propagation; synthetic aperture acoustic imaging; acoustic characterization of complex media, metamaterials.
Ethics in Engineering Education: Ongoing study of perception differences between students and faculty on academic integrity issues and how those differences can inform educational practice.
