Engineering Partners
The students and faculty of the Department of Engineering work closely with business and industry in Eastern North Carolina and throughout the state. These efforts are an essential element of the engineering outreach mission, resulting in a better understanding by our faculty of industry needs and better preparation of our graduates to succeed and perform in the workplace. There are many ways to develop this close working relationship with a public or private sector organization; here are some of the more frequently used:
- Faculty / Student Research: Industry partners can develop research projects involving faculty and students. These are cost-effective ways for business and industry to extend their technical capabilities.
- Internships: ECU Engineering students learn the skills of resume writing and career search starting in their freshman year. All are encouraged to pursue internships so they are familiar with the engineering workplace.
- Economic Development / Industry Recruitment: ECU Engineering is an engine for economic development, and faculty are often involved in helping recruit industry to the region.
- Senior Capstone Projects: These two-semester projects challenge a team of seniors to complete an engineering design problem proposed by an industrial client. This is a wonderful way for industrial partners to become involved with ECU Engineering. ECU engineering seniors must complete an open-ended capstone design project that tests and develops student skills in the hands-on practice of engineering design and problem solving. The projects are the culminating experience of the BS in Engineering program at ECU. We seek industry-sponsored projects that require a structured design approach starting with developing a problem statement and scope, identifying constraints, conducting a literature search, identifying and analyzing alternatives, completion of a conceptual design, testing and evaluation, and completion of a final design and report.
